On Wednesday, BGS and the wider community enjoyed a wonderful evening in a beautiful marquee setting within the school grounds. The Prize Giving evening celebrated the success of our girls, who have gone above and beyond this year, prizes ranged from Academic Excellence to the most prestigious accolade, the School Dux.
A lively and full marquee saw all prize winners, governers, trustees and teachers in attendance, with Dame Evelyn Glennie, a solo percussionist, our inspirational speaker. Profoundly deaf from the age of 12, she has taught herself to hear with parts of her body and encourages everyone to discover new ways of listening.
After a performance of The Way with Words and Language from our Upper Sixth girls and opening addresses from Headmistress, Miss MacKenzie, and Deputy Head Girl, Annie Marks, who welcomed our guest speaker Dame Evelyn Glennie, the awarding of prizes followed. Years 7 to Upper Sixth pupils were honoured for a wide variety of successes.
After a succession of prizes, Year 11 pupil Isobel Stearn performed Kreisler's Praeludium and Allegro on the violin. Further awards were handed out, with Upper Sixth student, Melissa Nash, winning the School Dux.
Dame Evelyn Glennie took part in a question and answer session, hosted by Deputy Head Girl, Michelle-Linda Cudjoe. It was a fascinating session; Dame Glennie explained every single ‘brick’ in her career and also the influence of her percussion tutor Ron Forbes.
The Head Girl, Devon Ward, brought the evening to a close and reflected on the influence of Dame Glennie as an inspiration to us all.
Miss MacKenzie added: “Prize Giving 2017 was a huge success; it was fitting to host the evening in the beautiful setting of the school grounds. We were honoured to have Dame Evelyn Glennie as our guest speaker.
“Congratulations to all the winners, the girls are a credit to the school and have worked extremely hard. The Upper Sixth students have been inspiring role models; I wish them all the best in the future.”
