Last week our girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 celebrated National Poetry Day (Thursday 28th September), through various events, displays and competitions. The theme for this year’s National Poetry Day was ‘Freedom’, which has produced some fabulous, thought-provoking original writing.

The girls were asked to write their poems on ‘dove’ templates to symbolise peace and freedom. They were then invited to place their completed symbols on the Poetree in the English corridor as a celebration of the creative writing process. As the tree grows, so the girls are able to spread and share the message of universal freedom with our whole school community.

Please do take time to see our wonderful display in the English corridor.

Here is a touching poem by Year 7 pupil Lottie Giles:

Freedom Life

Freedom is the opposite of being trapped.

Freedom is where you can speak your mind.

You can cook, you can sing.

Your talent is what makes you, so don’t be trapped.

A caged bird is reaching for the light.

The barbed wires are stopping it.

It’s wings are stuck and it’s neck it tangled.

Who will save this flightless bird, from the death that can occur.
