Geography Trips and Excursions

Mrs McPhail (Geography Teacher)

Where to spend time during a heat wave? Sheringham is a pretty good place to start!  Sunday morning saw the departure of all Year 10 geographers heading onwards to Sheringham in North Norfolk.

The purpose was to undertake two days of fieldwork, preparing the girls for part 3 of the GCSE exam and develop their investigatory and data collecting skills.

On arrival at the YHA, we headed to the beach and found some shade beneath the sea wall to have our first classroom session of the day. Once briefed, girls went off in groups to assess the environmental quality of 27 different sites within the central region of Sheringham and completed traffic counts.  In high temperatures but with a cool sea breeze, the occasional ice cream was a welcome treat and all girls competed work well.

Evening work saw girls presenting their data via a variety of graphs and after a long day in the ‘field’ they had achieved a lot.

Monday saw groups of girls look at how Sheringham’s coast has been managed and the impact of longshore drift was measured.

An evening walk saw all girls walk to the top of Beeston hill where a beautiful sunset provided the backdrop to a group photo.  Mrs Whiteley (Head of Geography) was also presented with a gift to mark her last time with BGS in Sheringham. This was her 28th fieldtrip and she delighted in telling the girls just how much the coastline had changed in that time.

On Tuesday, we arrived to Wells next the Sea and we walked to Holkham to look at the sand dunes – bringing the textbook to life.

The girls worked very hard in the heat and achieved a great deal in a short space of time.

Year 10 pupil, Karissa Singh, said: “It was fascinating to see all the geographical features that we’ve studied in real life and it really reinforced my understanding of coastal landscapes’
