Group 4 Science project group - Christabel Colman, Matisha Joshi and Meranie Kairu.

Prior to the half term break, we touched upon how the Lower Sixth IB Group 4 Science projects are focusing their investigations on COVID-19. This week, we are highlighting how one group researched the effectiveness of the different campaigns in helping people to understand the measures necessary to try and stop the virus from spreading.

Matisha Joshi (Lower Sixth) reflected on her groups project: “We based our project on the scientific communication of coronavirus information to the public, and we wanted to use surveys and research to find the best platform to do so. After the responses of the multiple surveys from the public and within the Lower Sixth, and existing information that we had collated from research, we had to reject both of our hypotheses, as we were unable to find the singular best platform.

“From the results and analysis of the surveys, we have discovered that multiple platforms can work well together to communicate information, as different people have access to different platforms. For example, younger people use social media more than older people, and therefore use that to seek out news and information. However, as social media cannot always be a trustworthy source of information, and to reach the older members of the community, the news can be a mostly impartial source of information that is accessible to all.”

Next week we will be highlighting how one group is comparing the action of different strengths of ethanol (alcohol) solution with different hand-gels on bacteria.
