Whole School Art & Textiles

Mrs Lugsden (Head of Art and Textiles)

The sense of connection and satisfaction you can find with any practical task or the development of an outcome are essential and highly enjoyable parts of the creative process, and I have been incredibly proud of the creative work that is continuing at BGS. Even whilst we haven’t been able to work together, that sense of a creative community still thrives. As with the last period of remote learning the importance of developing practical skills, having time away from our digital lives and feeling a sense of connection with our creative ideas are incredibly important; our need to ‘make’ and ‘do’ become ever more vital to our wellbeing.

Running practical lessons does have its challenges, but my colleagues and I have made it our priority to adapt and tweak lessons to give girls the best possible hands on experience. So, from students constructing card vases, developing painted artist research pages and working on independent final pieces in Art, to girls developing digital and physical collages, designing repeat patterns and generating design solutions for clothing in Textiles, we have maintained the creative push at BGS.

I am immensely proud to head such dynamic departments, and am always in admiration of the innovative approaches taken by girls and staff. As ever, the work is exciting and of super quality, and I hope that you agree, it has been a good half term’s work in the Art and Textiles departments!
