A Starry Night!

We are delighted to see Mrs Everest’s (Senior Science Technician) beautiful indicator droplet art featured on the cover of the Association for Science Education (ASE) SSR (School Science Review) journal.

Mrs Everest combines her love of chemistry and art to create her own version of Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night.

Mrs Everest reflected: “The picture uses chemicals such as copper (II) sulphate and natural plant extracts of aquilegia, oxalis leaf, purple iris, blue lobelia, petunia and black beans. There is of course a little red cabbage complexed with Fe2+ ions to create a beautiful blue. By changing the pH of some of the extracts, the lovely yellows can be formed. The droplets are applied to a template in a plastic wallet, once the picture is complete the droplets can be simply wiped off.”

“It was a huge honour to create this picture for this ASE journal. It also features a centrefold poster and links to a talk I gave at the ASE annual conference in January.”
