As part of their Science investigation into the question - Can an animal live in any place and time? Year 4 have been identifying different animal adaptations. The best way to explore why some beaks are big, or long and teeth may be sharp or flat for grinding, was to experiment with different implements to replicate a real life animal feature. From kitchen tongs and tweezers representing beaks, to ghee filled bags of ‘blubber’, the girls were prompted to consider the reasons behind specific animal adaptations. 

Surprisingly, looking through both empty and full toilet rolls prompted some interesting discussions about the eyesight of herbivores and carnivores. The benefits of blubber were certainly appreciated when the girls timed each other to see how long they could endure cold water temperatures, both with and without the protection of a layer of blubber. The competitive nature of some of the classes resulted in some impressive times!

Using their research skills the girls have now chosen an animal to focus their research skills on and discover the special adaptations their animal has developed over time.
