Whole School The Green Kitchen

As part of our Meet Our Greens Kitchen Team, we sat down with our wonderful Chequers Café Manager, Mrs Sharon Duckworth, to find out about her role here at BGS and why she loves her job.

Our Chequers Café is a hive of activity, serving breakfast through to after-school snacks and everything in between. Many staff and Sixth Formers can be found there, enjoying a delicious hot drink, with Illy Barista coffee being one of the favourites.

Q: What is your role at BGS?

A: I'm the manager of Chequers Café and am responsible for its day-to-day operations. I joined when Chequers relaunched after a complete refurbishment. Chequers is all about creating a fun and friendly environment with delicious food.

Q: How long have you worked at BGS?

A: I started my role at Chequers in September 2022, so I recently celebrated my one-year anniversary. Over the past year, we've significantly enhanced Chequers, involving a working group of Sixth Form students to tailor it to their preferences.

Q: What's the favourite part of your job?

A: I absolutely enjoy chatting and getting to know all the staff and students I interact with every day. I've forged lasting friendships with staff members and developed a fantastic relationship with the Sixth Form students.

Q: If you could have coffee with anyone, who would it be and why?

A: I'd have to choose my lovely grandmother, June. She used to live near the school site when I was young, and we would often walk past and admire the beautiful buildings. I'd love to talk to her about my role within these walls now. She'd adore it!

Q: What has been a highlight of your career?

A: I've particularly cherished how successful Chequers has become as a gathering place for everyone to relax during the school day. We have many exciting plans ahead, including adding sushi, smoothies and flavoured hot chocolate.

Q: What's your favourite part of your working day?

A: I really cherish the quieter moments during the day when one of the students or staff members comes in for a coffee. While I prepare their coffee, we get to chat about our day. The students feel comfortable talking freely, and I'm always there to listen, taking on board their ideas and thoughts for Chequers.

Q: If you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?

A: My favourite dinner would have to be a lamb roast, especially during Easter time. It's closely followed by lasagne with garlic bread. But my true guilty pleasure is crisps!!! I'm addicted to Walkers cheese and onion crisps!
