Junior School Science

By Miss Alarcon (Year 4 Teacher)

On Monday 16th October 2023, the Year 4 pupils had the great privilege of learning about the cardiovascular system from Dr Cliona Kenny, a consultant cardiologist at the Milton Keynes Hospital.

With her incredible analogies, Dr Kenny explained the complexity of the cardiovascular system in a child friendly way. The girls learned how the heart is like a house with valves that act like windows and doors; a transportation system with bigger roads (arteries and veins) and smaller roads (the blood vessels) that transport oxygen and nutrients around the body.

By allowing them to easily ‘visualise’ the complexity and wonders of the cardiovascular system, Dr Kenny managed to create a “thirst” for lots of medical knowledge from our pupils. It was amazing to see how they wanted to know more about strokes, cancer and the prevention of diseases. It was also a pure joy to see how some of our girls already possess vast knowledge about the human body.

Within 45 minutes, Dr Kenny turned the Junior School Science Room into a field that was full of inquisitiveness and excitement. Many were inspired to learn more about the human body in the hope that one day they could also become a doctor like Dr Kenny.

Once again, we are grateful for the talented community that we are surrounded by, and look forward to welcoming more parents as guest speakers who will inspire our girls on various career choices.
