Exploring Self-Expression

By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3)

In a colourful exploration of self-expression, our Year 3 girls recently embarked on an investigation into how identities are conveyed through art. Their final line of inquiry was homage to the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, whose self-portraits have long served as a powerful symbol of self-discovery and self-expression.

The journey began with research on Frida Kahlo's life and art, helping to understand her experiences, emotions, and cultural heritage. The girls were fascinated by the way Kahlo used her art to express her pain, triumphs, and sense of self. With a deeper understanding of her work, they eagerly accepted the challenge to create their own Frida Kahlo-inspired self-portraits.

The girls brought a unique perspective to their artwork, reflecting their individual experiences, interests and dreams. The classroom was abuzz with creativity as they meticulously added symbolic elements to their pieces, much like Kahlo did with her iconic self-portraits. The Year 3 investigation not only enriched their artistic skills on sketching and colour washes, but also instilled in them a deep appreciation for the power of art as a way to convey their unique identities. In the spirit of Frida Kahlo, these young artists have discovered that, in the world of art, self-expression knows no bounds!
