Junior School STEM

Mrs Thomas (Year 3 Teacher)

On Wednesday afternoon, the Randall hall was filled with a hubbub of noise, energy and a buzz of excitement as the Year 3s were joined by pupils from Bedford Prep School to tackle a range of STEM activities. From building the tallest tower, designing and making the strongest bridge and using calm composure and teamwork to skilfully move a ball across the hall, all challenges were met with fierce determination and increasing resilience. Communication skills were tested as pupils shared ideas about the best strategies to use to solve the problems and adapted their approaches if required. Teamwork was paramount and successful groups displayed these skills when completing their tasks. All in all, it was a very busy and action-packed afternoon which was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved!

Aizah Malik (3M) said: “I really loved the activity where we had to work as a team to get the ball into the pot. It was lots of fun and I couldn’t work out how we kept dropping it before we got there! It was nice to communicate with new people. I also loved our bridge made out of straws as it was successful in holding Mrs Martin’s (Head of Year 3) stone for 30 seconds!”

Sophie Ashley 3T said: “I enjoyed the tower building activity. I worked with my brother and his idea of stacking the cups to make a pyramid really worked. At first, I felt a bit nervous to communicate with others but then I felt happy making new friends and working with new people.”
