Our penultimate Cinéfilles discussion of the year was about a French film, considered by some to be a cult French comedy, adapted from a play, itself based on a true story about a group of people who, to amuse themselves, brought a ‘fool’ along to their weekly dinner together. They would mock their guest for his or her idiosyncrasies, and the winner of their ‘game’ was the person whose guest was deemed the biggest idiot. (Dinner for Schmucks was the title of the American remake!) When François Pignon is brought along as a dinner guest, chaos ensues.

We considered that the film, which was first released in 1998, still has its funny moments but has not aged well and would perhaps not go down as well with today’s audiences.
