On Friday 8th March, Year 8 participated in an Active Bystander Intervention Programme called Step in, Speak Up. The programme was conducted by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire, Bedford’s Local Authority School’s Safeguarding Team and Bedfordshire Police.

The workshop investigated the issue of violence against women and girls, exploring child-on-child abuse and societal pressures that hinder students from becoming active bystanders. Students watched a 45-minute drama piece covering this topic, followed by engaging in a workshop aimed at empowering them to understand safe ways to intervene if they encounter potential violence against women and girls. This experience provided students with both the confidence and knowledge to recognize and report potential instances of violence against women and girls.

Additionally, the workshop offered students the opportunity to learn how to approach a friend displaying problematic behaviour, as well as how to support friends who may be victims of domestic violence. They were introduced to the 5 D’s of bystander intervention: Distraction, Direct Action, Delegation, Delay, and Documentation, emphasising that intervention does not always require direct or loud actions. The afternoon was powerful, reinforcing the importance of responding as a bystander.

Maya (Year 8) said: “I think that this was a really interesting and important workshop that made a really difficult topic easier to understand. I also think that I learnt more about other things too like being a better friend and how to treat others in general. I think that this was an experience that everyone should have, boys and girls, and I am grateful to have had it. I now feel as though I know what to do if I ever come across this situation.”

Serena (Year 8) added: “Our workshop was very interesting and it really got us to think about what you would do in that scenario. I didn't know how impactful bullying and harassment could be to someone but with all the engaging activities, e.g. Debating and Video watching, I now know so much more about this topic. We discussed that it's okay to say no and that safety is always first. I am very glad we did this activity in the afternoon workshop as it was very informative for me who did not know much about this topic.”
