Mrs McKinnell (Music Teacher)
On Tuesday 12th March, Senior School girls put on their Spring Chamber Concert. This event is a chance for the Music Department to showcase all the fantastic work occurring in small chamber groups, and by soloists.
Consort Choir, which amalgamates girls from BGS and boys from Bedford School, began the events, performing the Disney Fly Medley. It was followed by different soloists including Lucy Barrett in Year 8, who performed a Mozart flute concerto accompanied by First Orchestra; as well as a solo from Year 7 pupils Melisa Rasool (violin) and Sarah Pepper (clarinet). There was also a stunning collection of three songs taken from Handel’s Messiah, sung by Upper Sixth students Katie Sharrock, Emily Baker and Isobel Stearn, and accompanied by a small orchestra made up of Music Department staff.
Chamber ensembles included Highly Strung (a string quartet made up of Year 7 and 8 girls), and the Senior String Quartet, Wind Band and a Piano Duo. Emily and Isobel also impressed the audience with their own compositions, pieces written as part of the creating element of their IB coursework. Emily's piece, I Rise, was an uplifting vocal solo with piano accompaniment. Isobel's creation was a piano trio in Romantic style.
The evening was hugely inspirational, with extremely accomplished performances being given from girls right across the age range.
