Mrs Cruse (Head of Year 9, History Teacher)

On Friday 22nd March, the entire Year 7 group headed to the Black Country Museum to bring their History topic from 'rocket to apple' alive.

The girls had the opportunity to go down a coal mine and also had a trip on a canal boat where they had a go at legging, which is a method of moving a boat through a canal tunnel. The girls enjoyed a guided tour of the old-fashioned houses including a general store and toll house. Read student reflections from the day below:

Rhiannon Ward - “The mine was a thrilling and scary experience. There are so many dangers in the mine; it is shocking that children had to work in these conditions. I can’t imagine how the mine workers could go down 12 hours a day.”

Jessica Wiggs - “I really enjoyed the canal ride because it was underground and you could see some fossils in the walls. The best part was the two big caverns we went through”.

Lucy Hobart Houghton – “The trip was great fun as we got a taste of what life was like during the Industrial Revolution. We got to see the different houses and what it was like in the coal mines where it was dark, cold and was very low. The canal boat trip was my favourite thing we did, as we went on a boat looking at the limestone mine.”

Kaila Hill - “I found our trip to the Black Country Museum very enjoyable. It was really interesting going down the coal mines and seeing what it would have been like if you had actually worked down there during the Industrial Revolution. I found it a bit scary as I couldn’t see where we were going because it was so dark. It was fascinating going in the houses and seeing how differently they lived to the way we live now.”
