On Thursday 12th of March, four Year 10 mathematicians (Tobi Apesin, Kimya Ghods, Athena Kurtti and Erin Rowe) attended the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme, Maths Feast, held at the Milton Keynes Academy.
It was an incredible experience and we are grateful that we were able to take part in it. Although we may not have done as well as we had hoped, it was still a very interesting event to compete in.
We were able to persevere through difficult and realistic mathematics application questions, encouraging each other (which is why we were able to get the teamwork award), learning new things and various ways we can solve problems, which was an additional bonus.
There were four rounds: the first was a merry-go-round where we had limited time to answer questions and swap them with each other; the second round consisted of six questions, which we had to answer as a group, but were only allowed to submit four out of the six. In the third round, we were presented with an information sheet and then had to answer some questions using that information. The fourth and final round was a relay where we had to work in pairs and solve questions where the answer would be used in the other pair’s question.
As well as receiving a certificate for teamwork, we had a notable performance in the relay round, in which we got the third highest score of all the teams.
