Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)
As part of this term’s Year 5 Unit of Inquiry, the girls were challenged to design a piece of technology that would further our understanding of the universe.
Having looked at the history of space technology and tracking ongoing space developments, such as the recent news of how satellites are being used to track elephant habitats for conversation, many of the girls were inspired to look at how technology can be used to impact positively on the environment.
The girls’ innovative ideas and thinking skills resulted in some wonderful inventions such as finding ways to turn space debris into fuel to space vehicles. Whilst presenting their ideas, the girls were able to communicate a clear understanding of the function of their designs by explaining the purpose of the design and how it worked. Following on from their planning and designs, the girls then created models, using objects from around their homes, which allowed them to demonstrate the mechanics of their designs in the short films they created to present their inventions to each other.
The Year 5 teachers were so proud and impressed with how the girls rose to this challenge with such enthusiasm, curiosity and a vision of the possibilities for future technology.
