Mrs Woodhouse (Year 5 Teacher)
In Year 5, we have been researching the American Modernist artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. The girls have been fascinated by her close-up paintings of flowers and how by painting the flowers at such close range, the viewer sees the object in a completely different way.
Georgia O’Keeffe famously wrote: “If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.”
The girls have used Augmented Reality (AR) models of flowers to look at them close up and view them in a very different way before sketching and painting them themselves. They have been pioneers themselves! The excited shouts of ‘I have an orchid on my desk!’ and, ‘there is a massive rose in the middle of our classroom!’ were delightful.
