Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3)
There has been an air of Spring throughout the Junior School, with the awakening of another fabulous STEM Week.
This year the theme was centred around Growth and #SmashingStereotypes and there was no better role model than alumna, Anna Hunt (BGS 2017), who is a Trainee Assistant Farm Manager for The Elveden Estate. She delivered an inspiring, virtual talk to the girls about her passion for Farming and Agriculture and what has taken her on this pathway, showing the ways that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths feed into her daily working life.
Following on from this each Year Group had been set a project to work on through their own Inquiry. In Year 3, they were asked to think about the growth of sustainable buildings and design a building for the future. Thinking about what the purpose of their building or structure is, where in the world they would build and therefore, what materials would be available there to construct, the girls will be working towards a final project next week which displays these criterion. They have made strong links with their own Inquiry this term and we are excited to see their finished models.
As a finale to the week, alumna, Paula Stevenson led an in-person assembly to explain how her love of Science and Mathematics at Dame Alice Harpur School led her into an exciting life of Engineering. She talked about the transferable skills that she has used in the various industries she has worked in and went on to help the pupils see the multitude of Engineering roles. The pupils were particularly inspired with her own mechanical engineering background and flooded her with questions both in the assembly and when she came to visit the classrooms afterwards.
As an all-girls school, we are so lucky to have the opportunity for alumnae to share their own experiences and inspire the next generation of STEMettes.
