Senior School Mathematics

Over the past two weeks, mathematicians from Year 5 all the way up to the Upper Sixth have been competing for the coveted Times Table Bee competition trophies.

129 students entered the first round, where they had to answer as many times tables as they could in one minute. Every student who entered earned a much-valued House Point but only the top 5 of each age group made it to the final!

Years 5 and 6 started the show off, followed by the staff round, Year 7 to 8, Year 9 to 11 and finally the Sixth Form.

In the Junior School, Regan, Simone, Hawa-Maryam, Jemima and Michelle all made it to the final. They showed such amazing risk taking and resilience, and were an inspiration to all of their friends from the Junior School that came to support them. They were followed closely by the staff round of the Times Tables Bee, with a number of Junior and Senior School teachers participating. Mrs Baker in the Junior School took the title, answering more times tables than all of the Maths teachers! Every staff member was bold, principled and a great example to the students that they teach.

In the Senior School, Nicky Kumar in Year 7, Danae Karavaggelis in Year 9 and Anika Dutta in Year 13 won the elusive trophy for their age group. The competition was extremely tough with all finalists answering with confidence and automaticity. It was clear they had all been practising!

It was great to see so much enthusiasm and competitiveness among the staff and students! Well done to everyone who entered. We should also say a big thank you to the Maths Department and Mrs Copp for organising this competition. They encouraged a huge cohort of students to participate in the various different heats, giving up lunchtimes to ensure that everyone could access the competition. They also had the tough job of reading the times tables quick enough, and recording the responses in a short space of time.
