Miss Huckle (Head Rowing Coach)
On Sunday 13th November, 40 of our year 11, 12 and 13 rowers travelled to Ely to compete in a Private Match and training day with Kings School Ely, Norwich School and Rob Roy Boat Club. This was a fantastic opportunity for our more senior rowers to complete a longer course, in preparation for the Schools Head of the River and National Junior Sculling Head in early 2023. Our crews competed over a 4,000m course on the same stretch of water that was used to host the prestigious Oxford vs Cambridge Boat Race behind closed doors during the COVID 19 pandemic. All of our rowers put some pleasing times on the board, and the day acted as a fantastic stepping stone to our upcoming events.
In addition to a brilliant opportunity to train on this stretch of water, our BGS rowers were also incredibly lucky to be hosted by Cambridge University Boat Club. Here, our rowers were able to see the university facilities, and to boat from the same landing stage as these high-level athletes. We even got to see the potential 2023 Boat Race athletes in action, completing their training alongside us on the same stretch of water. Overall, it was a very exciting and inspirational day for our senior rowers!
This coming weekend sees a double-header for Team Rowing. We race at the Fours Head on the infamous Tideway stretch this Saturday, and on home water in Bedford at Star Autumn Head on Sunday. On Sunday, BGS crews will be racing between 8.45am and 1.15pm – it would be great to see lots of supporters lining the banks, and to hear the ‘BGS roar’!
