Following last term’s Active Inquiry homework in which Year 5 pupils were challenged to identify an issue in their local community, some of our pupils have continued to have an impact by presenting to local officials. Florence, 5W, held a bake sale to raise £147 for Elstow Moot Hall. She presented the funds to a local Councillor last week and received thanks from the council for her efforts. The money will go towards the roof, which needs fixing and, after this, Florence hopes to visit as she has never actually been inside!
Florence said: “It was challenging to get customers because there weren’t that many people passing and it was a bit nerve-wracking to see the Councillor. I am hoping to do another one for a different charity.”
Other successes for this homework include Claudia (5W), who took her petition to reduce the speed in her village to present at the local Council. She returned last week to her the outcome of the hearing to find that the vote had been supported by the Council and will now be implemented. Claudia was commended by the Council Chambers for promoting this cause and being an example of ‘democracy in action’. Molly (5R) also contacted her local MP, Mohammad Yasin, regarding the lack of streetlights in her local area. In a letter of reply, he has offered his support to Molly and offered to visit Year 5 next term!
We are so proud of all the efforts of the pupils in Year 5 and look forward to hearing continued stories of their successes.
