By Dr Howe (Science Teacher and Silver DofE Manager)
The Silver DofE students have been out on expedition again, this time on their assessment in the White Peaks in Derbyshire this past weekend. After experiencing difficult conditions on the practice expedition, the students had learned a great deal about what kit was essential, how to pack it effectively, the level of fitness required and the importance of teamwork.
With high morale, students began at Carsington Water and headed north towards Birchover. They were aware that staff would be supervising remotely so it was their responsibility to manage their map reading and it was very pleasing to see that any early navigation errors were quickly corrected. Our destination was Barn Farm campsite, complete with peacocks and alpacas, and all groups arrived in good spirits with plenty of time to camp, cook their meals and enjoy some social time together.
The second day was demanding, involving crossing some picturesque, undulating countryside with great views in the Spring sunshine. Again, when discussing their routes with their assessors, teams demonstrated the progress that had been made with their map reading skills. Groups took their time, having snack breaks and taking the opportunity to gather evidence ready for their aim presentations. It was a long, demanding day meaning the first group arrived at Berresford Lane Campsite after 5pm.
On day three, our students had clearly perfected their campcraft skills with the first group heading off by 7.45am. Another bright day in the stunning countryside, our groups made great progress and with very few navigational errors finished their assessed expedition at the very grand Ilam Hall. I am delighted to report that all 41 students passed their expedition assessment and equally pleased with how many were expressing an interest in carrying on to the Gold Award in the Lower Sixth.
Finally, I would like to give a hearty shout out to Mr Bowden, Mrs Sadler, Miss Sadler, Mr Thurston and Mrs Howard who all volunteered their time over the Bank Holiday weekend; without them this DofE expedition would not have been possible.
