Bedford Girls’ School’s Years 7 and 8 athletics team broke a county record in qualifying for the regional round of the English Schools’ Athletic Association Track & Field Cup on Friday (20th May).

Facing schools from across Bedfordshire in the first round of the junior age group (under 14) at the Bedford International Athletics Stadium, BGS registered an imposing total of 423 points, a record for the Bedfordshire round of the competition.

With the Cup Final being held on home turf in Bedford in July, the Years 7 and 8 side first need to come through the East Anglia Regional A Finals.

The Years 9 and 10 team will also be joining their junior counterparts next month at the Regional Finals, after winning the first round of the Intermediate age group (under 16) category by a slender six points.

Mrs Axford, BGS Head of Sport, said: “For Bedford Girls’ School teams to qualify for the Regional Finals in both age categories is really pleasing.

“And for the Years 7 and 8 team to set a county record in such a prestigious competition for schools, proves we’re on the right track in terms of developing top class athletes for the future.”
