A Hands-on Taster Day

Art and Technology

On Thursday (25th January 2018), our Year 8 girls got creative juices flowing in the Art and Technology Faculty. The creative taster day gives our girls the opportunity to explore the different subject options (Art, Design Technology, Food Technology and Textiles) to choose in Year 9.

In Textiles, the girls had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the process of screen-printing. Using the school environment, namely roof tops, windows and doorways for inspiration, the girls recorded their responses on their iPad and created designs. Printing onto paper with layers of colour and stencils, the girls formed the paper into mini booklets with the use of accordion folds. These booklets will now be used to inform their designs when making a shoulder bag.

It was a hands-on day in Design Technology, where the girls made and packaged a BGS branded iPad stand. The girls used workshop skills such as draw filing, buffing and using glass paper to edge finish acrylic and plywood stands and created BGS logos on the laser cutter. They designed the back of the packaging using PCs in DT and created the front using the vacuum former.

In Art, the girls spent their time researching and exploring mono printing, pen drawing and ceramic techniques. They were able to focus their attention on investigating a range of objects in preparation for their class project work, where they will develop these studies into a final ceramic outcome in the summer.

There were delicious delights in the Food and Nutrition department. The girls made tasty lemon meringue pies and investigated how changing pH affects meringues. The girls practised their piping skills and discovered why the correct oven temperature is so important.
