Bedford Girls’ School came together on Friday 9th November for a moving and thought-provoking Remembrance Assembly.

Led by Mrs Sadler (Head of History and Politics), this year’s service held a special resonance as it marked 100 years since the end of the First World War and the first time the Junior and Senior Schools came together for a Remembrance service. Addressing the whole school, Mrs Sadler poignantly reminded us to reflect on the immense contribution the men and women of our armed forces make to keep us safe. Although Armistice was 100 years ago, the heroism of those who fought and died is very real today.

During the service, there were special readings from the CCF Head of Corps, Isobel who read For the Fallen, Maryam (Year 11) read Siegfried Sassoon’s, Does it matter? And Eloise (Year 11) read Carol Ann Duffy’s, The Wound in Time.

The Bel Canto Choir, conducted by Mr Atkins (Music Teacher) and accompanied by talented Bedford School Chorister, Silas (Upper Sixth) sang a moving rendition of The Dying Soldier, American traditional arranged by Nigel Short.

Charlotte (Year 9) performed The Last Post on the trumpet, a powerful and ubiquitous song of Remembrance. The whole school observed a two minutes silence to mark the centenary.

Pupils from the school also contributed to a number of Remembrance services over the weekend. Special mentions go to Mollie (Year 11), who had a busy Sunday performing The Last Post beautifully on the bugle at the Pipe Service in the Great Hall, Bedford School at 6am, Isham Church, Northamptonshire at 9am and Orlingbury Church, Northamptonshire at 11am.

Isobel (Upper Sixth), who as CCF Head of Corps represented as part of a colour party at the Pipe Service on Sunday morning. Isobel was also involved in the Bedford School Chapel Remembrance service by reading a lesson and leading the CCF colour party.

Talented flutist Lucy (Year 8) performed The Armed Man- A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins, as part of a small ensemble with the Eagle Choir (PTA Choir of Bedford School and BGS) at Buckden Church’s community Remembrance service.
