Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE)
The BGS cross-country team continued their fine form in the long distance running season. BGS have won every district age group at both the Middle School District event and at the Upper Schools District event this season. As a school, we had the highest number of girls qualify for the County Championships.
Last week, the team took to the muddy trails of the cross-country partnership district (Wednesday 30th January) event at Sharnbrook Academy.
The conditions were very muddy; with signs of the overnight heavy frost still lingering, it was a challenging terrain underfoot. The athletes produced fantastic results, team winners at every girl’s age group with BGS individuals Rosie Foster (Year 7), Natalie Simmons (Year 9) and Bronwyn Tagg (Lower Sixth) finishing 1st in three of the four individual races.
This Wednesday saw the final the event in the schools cross-country season at the County School Championships in Ampthill Park, and as always BGS was well represented. On this occasion, the athletes were running for an individual place in the county team rather than to contribute to a BGS team score as they had done in the two previous races.
A total of 24 girls qualified for this event, following outstanding performances at last week’s district event. Conditions underfoot were significantly better than last week, with the best runners from each District in Bedfordshire coming together to race for a place in the county team.
Most notable results:
U13 event (Years 6 and 7) – Rosie Foster (Year 7) placed 1st
Junior Race (Years 8 and 9) – Natalie Simmons (Year 9) placed 1st, Gabriela Woodroffe-Gomez (Year 8) placed 7th (both qualify for county team).
Intermediate Race (Years 10 and 11) – Marisa Mistry (Year 11) placed 5th (qualified for county team)
Senior Race (Lower and Upper Sixth) – Rebecca Nisbet placed 8th (qualified for county team)
Congratulations to all girls who have represented the schools cross country team this term. It takes true grit and determination to succeed in this sport and you have all shown this in abundance.
