Following the launch of the Campaign Challenge in January, the Lower Sixth girls have been working in small groups to choose a social issue they feel passionate about and design a campaign to inspire and educate the BGS community about this issue. Before the half term break, each group invited Years 7 to Upper Sixth students and staff to complete a short survey to help them identify myths and misconceptions associated with their issue. Starting on Monday this week and going on over 4 weeks, each group will be planning and carrying out events around school.

The first group to launch their campaign are campaigning about male domestic abuse.  They chose this issue as they felt that while women are more likely to be victims of domestic abuse, there has been, and should be, more awareness that it can happen to men too. This is particularly relevant with the recent case of local man, Alex Skeel, and his abusive girlfriend Jordan Worth, finally resulting in her being the first woman to be convicted of coercive and controlling behaviour.

Jasmin Chambers, from the group said ‘We should not condone the behaviour of discriminating against men no matter who we are. It devalues the idea of feminism. Feminism is often misconceived as women being better than men, when it is about men and women being equal. If we want to be equal to men, we need to be held equally accountable in regards to how we treat the opposite sex.”
