We are delighted to announce that Lucy Barrett (Year 8) won first prize at the prestigious British Flute Society (BFS) Competition on Wednesday.

The talented flutist performed in Regents’ Hall, Oxford Street, to an audience and panel of esteemed professional flautists. She was awarded first prize in the ‘School Performer’ category, and was praised by the judges for her commanding and imaginative performance. To win a national competition of this standing is an outstanding achievement.

Lucy said: “It was a great experience. The standard was so very high and it was wonderful to hear so many fantastic performances on the flute from young people. I was delighted to win and found the whole day very encouraging.”

Lucy’s flute teacher, Sarah O’Flynn, Britten Sinfonia and BBC Symphony Orchestra, who accompanied her to the competition said: “The British Flute Society is Europe’s oldest flute organisation. Its prestigious, annual competition attracts entries from the most talented young flute players in the UK.”

Lucy started playing the flute at 5 years old. She gained a place at Junior Guildhall at age 8 and is currently principal flute with Britten Sinfonia Academy. She achieved Grade 8 distinction last year at BGS and enjoys the opportunities provided in school to perform.
