Florence Doxford and Molly Lincoln (Year 7)
On Saturday 16th March, girls from Years 6, 7, 8, 10 and the Upper Sixth set off to London for the 2019 British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships.
Held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, the multi-discipline event involved a swim and run for all age groups with the distances depending on the competitor’s age.
Team BGS excelled in the championships. In our U12 age group, we swam two lengths in the 50m pool, and then ran in the biggest stadium we have ever seen. Overall, Molly was placed 67th, Florence 122nd and Charlotte Brakenbury was placed 76th. There were just under 150 girls competing in our age group and we came a very pleasing 17th as a team.
In the U13 age group, Rosie Foster placed 36th, Gabriela Woodroffe-Gomez placed 53rd, and Isabel Jackson placed 62nd. They all did very well and finished 8th as a team. In the U16 age group, Rebecca Knibb placed 18th. Upper Sixth student Bronwyn Tagg finished in an amazing 2nd place.
Bronwyn said: “I am extremely pleased to gain the runner-up spot, in the end hard work paid off. This event has set me up nicely for the start of the season and I am looking forward to doing a variety of races this season. While I did manage to pull out a strong performance on the day, credit must be given to the effort that Mr Castro puts into giving the other girls and I opportunities like this to do what we enjoy.”
This was such an amazing experience for all of us. All these girls train hard and did their best, they are all winners.
