Junior School Trips and Excursions

By 6NC

On Monday, Year 6 embarked on a three-day, two-night outdoor adventure to Preston Montford Field Studies Centre in Shrewsbury. Set in 30 acres of grassland and woodland on the banks of the River Servern, the Field Studies Centre is visited by schools like ours to study Geography and Biology.

We were living amongst nature, experiencing the environment and identifying the different species on land and in ponds. It was all very interesting and we were amazed to see all the unique creatures in the area.

‘Time flies by when you are having fun’ – Preston Montford went as quick as a blink. We caught animals and insects and we think we even found a new species. For two hours, we became designers to save bird eggs, being wildlife rescuers.

We also participated in team challenges, mammal trapping – we found mice, voles and shrews (all unharmed and released back into the wild), pond dipping (water scorpions and wrapped caddis fly larvae were highlights), orienteering with a compass, nest building, taking measurements of wind, light, humidity and temperature using new equipment and enjoying spending time with our year group.

It was an inspirational trip for everyone as we made real connection with the environment and challenged ourselves throughout the residential.
