Mr Wells (Director of Rowing)
Last weekend, the BGS contingent descended on the River Thames for the Marlow Town Regatta.
Following successful performances at the recent National Schools’ Regatta, we decided to reconfigure the senior squads into two eights, which consisted of Years 11 and Sixth Form students. The crews raced as a first eight (WJ18) and a second eight (WJ16), and provided good practice working together ahead of Henley Women’s regatta next week. These two eights raced against the same eights from Great Marlow School (GMS) in their respective finals. The second eight a length down with 100m, drew it close to a half a length at the finish. The first eight lead the entire way but in the closing stages couldn't hold off the GMS charge for the line.
The Year 10 fours were much more competitive than they have been all season, with all putting on strong performance and our third boat managed to beat our first boat in the semi-final!
The Year 9 quads made a big step on at this regatta and we entered the three boats in two separate events. Boat One and Three had a good tussel down the course, narrowly missing out to the winning crew. Boat Two had an amazing race, powering down the course well ahead of their competition and moved through to the final. Unfortunately, the final was a step too far for this quad but they should be extremely pleased with their performance.
Crew of the Match goes to the Year 9 boat two of Emily Coughlin, Hannah Russell, Isla Ness, Anastasia Bullock, Charlie Holmes for how they raced their heat.
Our senior crews move on to race at Henley Women's regatta this Sunday. They will be reunited with all the crews on Saturday 29th June for our last race of the season at Reading Town Regatta.
