Mrs Whomsley (Head of Year 5)

This term, Year 5 have been enjoying the challenges in their science lessons as part of their new Unit of Inquiry, which centres around the theme of exploration. The girls have been following this concept throughout their investigations into materials and their properties.

The girls started with investigating the materials and their physical changes by making slime in its familiar format, then the girls added additional quantities of the original ingredients to change the consistency and reflected on why and how the slime had been affected by the changes. Following on from their studies of slime, the girls created ‘oobleck’ and investigated the unusual properties of this non-Newtonian fluid and how they could alter it.

The girls have continued to be challenged this week to develop their independent inquiry skills whilst working on their investigations to find solutions to practical problems explorers face such as making dirty water clean enough to drink!

Ava and Rosie, 5W said: “It was a fun way to learn about materials as well as working as a team – the dirty water challenge was our favourite activity so far!”
