Mrs Inkson (Year 5 Teacher)

This week, Mrs Inkson’s (Year 5 teacher) Mathematics class have been learning how to calculate the area and perimeter of shapes. Not only have the mathematicians been working with simple regular shapes, but they have also been investigating the area and perimeter of more complicated shapes that are made up of a number of rectangles put together- these are called composite rectilinear shapes!

The girls have been applying learning to design innovative towns.  First, they had to design the town wall, which had a given perimeter. It was interesting how the different towns had different shaped perimeters, even though they all measured the same. Once the calculations were correct, the girls designed the town’s buildings. Finally, they used their knowledge of finding the area of complex shapes, with curved sides to design the town park and a lake.
