Noor Malik (Year 10)
Recently, the Year 10 students have been very busy with revision, but some have also been busy in participating in Model UN. If you haven’t heard or know of Model UN, it’s an opportunity where students can get together and assume the role of nation ambassadors or representatives to debate, seek or solve any global issues.
Currently, we are focusing on the Syrian refugee crisis where refugees are escaping from a country, which has been torn down by war, to other countries nearby. We have been taking on the roles of countries from the USA to Russia to Israel and many other countries. During these weekly meetings, each country presents their views on this crisis and discuss what we could do to solve this. The Model UN club was divided into two, where countries like Russia, the UK, the USA and Saudi Arabia worked together and then countries like Israel, Italy, Spain and others close to Syria worked together. Two resolutions were thought of, one from each side, and a vote was made. Eventually the solution from Israel and its partners was used.
Model UN is such an engaging club as students can see and hear about issues and problems going on in the world. This allows them to take charge and take on the role of representatives of any country and figure out solutions for this problem. It also helps us with our leadership, research, writing and public speaking skills which are very important for the future. Model UN will also benefit our future university applications and job applications as many skills are developed. It is something so beneficial for the future, as these skills of critical thinking, evaluation and cooperation will be useful in jobs, university and in general.
Overall, this is a great opportunity for young students to shine, enjoy and connect with others who share the same interests. We would like to thank Mrs Greenwood (Head of Philosophy and Religion) and Mrs Barber (Head of Business and Economics) for arranging this great opportunity at BGS. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.
