Mr Potter (Director of Digital Strategy)

One of the technologies we have been researching at BGS this year is the use of augmented reality (AR) and digital twins. These are scanned, or created 3D objects that can be viewed as a standalone model, or put into the real world through the lens of a camera on a smartphone or tablet.

This technology is increasingly being used to provide a more realistic experience of things that we either cannot physically get to, or do not exist. At BGS we have used it to look at cells of the human body, chemical elements, and also to look at computer components during the lockdown period.

Using a LiDAR camera and 3D software, we are now able to scan and build bespoke 3D models for use in class and also showcase digital twins to a wider audience.

Here are our first published digital twins - a sculpture by Karishma Patel (Lower Sixth). This piece of work is Untitled and inspired by bones and Henry Moore, view HERE.

A piece of textiles work by Sara Atab (Year 11), view HERE.

If you would like to download either of these models and put them in your home using augmented reality, open the link on your iOS device, hit the ‘Download 3D Model’ link and choose USDZ as the file type. Then enjoy some BGS art in your own home!
