Miss Coote (Year 4 Teacher)

Year 4 have been so lucky to be able to invite three of our parents over the past week or so to share their skills in relation to our Unit of Inquiry Who We Are and our central idea which is: The choices people make affects their health. We kicked off our first visit on Friday with Mrs Dagger, an experienced yoga teacher who specialises in teaching children. Throughout the afternoon, the girls learned about the origins of this ancient practise and had fun moving through each pose and finding happiness. They really benefited from understanding how to be aware of their feelings, and were given some tools to use to help them deal with them. Charlie (4C) said: “I found the yoga calm, relaxing and peaceful. I can’t wait to try it at home.”

On Monday, we invited BGS parent’s Dr Kenny and Dr Sookhun-Gell in to teach the year group about how the heart works and how to keep healthy. The girls were given the opportunity to use a blood pressure machine and a fingertip pulse oximeter before and after exercise to assess the impact of movement on their heart rate. They also used stethoscopes to listen to how the sound and speed of our heart beats changed. After this, they talked about veins, arteries and oxygenation before acting this out as a group which was super fun and memorable!

The girls really developed their ability to be an inquirer throughout these sessions, asking lots of questions and showing curiosity throughout. A big thank you to our parents who delivered fantastic and engaging workshops.
