Mrs Barrett (English Teacher)
Year 7 students have been developing their global outlook this week by reading poetry from other cultures and creating poetry about their own cultures. Students tackled enquiry questions on culture and developed a class definition before reading a range of Poems on the Underground and finally writing poems of their own drawing on their own culture.
Here are a few excerpts and reflections for your enjoyment:
Stonehenge and London and afternoon tea
Royals and rugby and moors wild and free
Cathedrals and mosques and gurdwaras and more
Quaint little islands just off the shore
The lesson made me realise I didn’t know much about my culture and I did some research and realised the British culture is so diverse and I wanted to write and celebrate that aspect. Lucy Melville (7CRS).
The sound of the fiddle
The smell of the peat
This is where my ancestors meet
The lesson got me thinking about my family in Ireland and I dedicated the poem to my Great Aunt who died last year who always encouraged me with my creative writing. Amber-Lilli McCarthy (7CRS).
Where the bombs once rested
Palm trees now grow
Malta
Small country
Big history
My culture is really important to me as I have drawn strength from it in these difficult pandemic times. The Maltese are known as great fighters. Darcey Griffiths (7CRS).
