Over 60 parents signed up for a 3-hour workshop with Naella Grew from Teenagers Translated. We began by considering the purpose of adolescence: taking risks, separating from parents, social bonding and the development of important relationships. We also thought about how technology can tap into those fundamental needs.
When teenagers experience difficulty, they may turn to negative coping strategies which can involve substances; such as alcohol and drugs, negative behaviours and an over-reliance on technology, particularly social media. We considered how helping our children develop positive self-soothing strategies is key in helping our children as they grow and experience challenges. Using breathing techniques to calm them, and us, can really help de-escalate a situation so that a measured conversation can happen. Other positive strategies mentioned included exercise, walks in nature, listening to music, playing with pets and meditation. We discussed the need for careful and calm communication, not only in reflecting on times of high tension but also in setting boundaries with teens.
Parents are the first teachers of children and they are also lifelong role models, so we reflected on our own behaviours and how those behaviours can inform our children. Parents as a secure base was considered in the context of Attachment Theory and how strong attachment enables teenagers to fulfil the purpose of adolescence and become self-managing, secure and empathic young adults.
