Members of the Map Reading and Camp-Craft Club put their skills into practice at their mini-expedition on Sunday 26th June accompanied by Miss Forster (Year 5 Teacher) and Mrs Copp (Deputy Head of Junior School).
The sun shone and a cool breeze blew, making for perfect weather. The five resilient members of Year 6 had to find locations using 6-figure grid references on an OS map to find treasure and were rewarded with a welcomed ice cream. They then had to navigate a further 12km between Bromham and Pavenham and cooked lunch on a Trangia with a generous topping of nettles (safely blanched and dried) for an adventurous twist.
We were just under half way when one of the navigators, Sylvia, asked, ‘Are we half way yet?’ When she discovered that we still had over 7km to walk, she replied, ‘Good, because I don’t want the day to end’. The girls worked as a team, agreeing on decisions and checking their maps and compasses for confirmation of the direction to take, and encouraged each other as they became more tired. The club members should be very proud of their achievements and we hope to see them again, either with the DofE or the CCF programmes available in the Senior School.
