We are so proud of BGS alumna and cycling sensation, Sophie Lewis, who claimed a bronze medal for Team England on the opening day of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games during the summer.

Sophie, who left Bedford Girls’ School in 2020, was part of a star-studded line up which consisted of athletes with previous Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games success – including five-time Olympic champion, Dame Laura Kenny, and double-gold medal winning Paralympic champion, Steve Bate MBE.

Racing alongside Dame Laura Kenny, Josie Knight and Maddie Leech, the track cyclists put in a stellar performance in the Team Pursuit against Wales, winning by almost two seconds!

We spoke to Sophie about her incredible achievement, she said: “Competing at the Commonwealth Games was an absolutely amazing experience and something I will never forget. To come away with a bronze medal in the team pursuit was very special and it was also pretty cool helping Laura take the gold in the scratch race.

“The roar of the crowd which circulates with you as you go round the track was insane and it was just such a fun, enjoyable and rewarding experience on and off the bike.

“After a long month on the track with the U23 European champs a couple of weeks before commies it’s been nice to get back into a bit of road racing, for the final push of the season.”

An Inspiration to all students, BGS and the wider community, we are extremely proud of Sophie’s outstanding achievements.
