We are super proud to announce that that whole school has been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Merit.
Eco-Schools is an international education programme that prompts young people to explore sustainability and climate change and take action.
Over the past 10 years, BGS has successfully retained its Eco Schools Green Flag award in recognition of our continued efforts to create a sustainable school environment, much of the work attributed to the Eco Council. Being part of the Eco Council allows for students to not only raise awareness and improve the School’s environmental credentials but to develop valuable life skills such as leadership as well as improve well-being and increase confidence.
The Eco-Schools Team praised the School’s Eco Council commitment to the programme and eco-cause, adding: “We love the range of activities that your Eco-Committee planned for delivery. The fact that they cover both indoor (an energy audit, looking at possible renewable sources, anti-litter posters and checking the air quality with a monitor) and outdoor (regular litter picks, providing more actual bins and a rideshare programme) activities is excellent. We also loved reading about how you had incorporated learning about global issues not simply into the Geography and Science Curriculum (most common ones) in your school, but had focused on other areas such as English, Economics and Drama.”
Mrs Greenwood (Eco and Sustainability Lead) commented: “The continued hard work from Mrs. Whomsley and the Junior school eco club propelled us to Eco Award as well as the efforts of the senior club. The RSPB Big Bird Watch, the sustainable fashion show, clothes swaps, Litter Club, the catering menu makeovers and the whole school’s openness to getting active with initiatives outside of academic time created an atmosphere deserving of the prestigious Green Schools Eco Flag Award. We look forward to making an even bigger impact this year!"
