Sixth Form

One of the joys of being a Sixth Form student at BGS is the freedom you enjoy, not just in what you study, but the way you study.

Life in the Sixth Form is about discovering your potential, whether that’s in the classroom or beyond it.

The Edit recently sat down with Lower Sixth student, Alexa Coles, who joined the BGS Sixth Form this year.

What attracted you to join Bedford Girls’ School?

The initial attraction came from the wide range of opportunities, like the after school sports clubs. I am currently really enjoying seeing my improvement in lacrosse, and the after school sessions are making a massive impact on my physical health and are super inclusive with varying ability of skills. I am enjoying this so much, as there is such a positive, enthusiastic environment which has been very encouraging as a new student. There are also many school trips that are subject specific.

During November, I will be attending an Othello theatre trip at the Playhouse for English; this is the play I am studying for A Level English Literature. This is perfect as I am a visual learner and this will develop my knowledge and understanding of the play even outside of a classroom. When I joined the BGS community, I expressed my passion for poetry, and exploring the deeper meaning of texts and novels. Inevitably I was led to joining the English Society, this consists of various activities like quizzes and discussions joint with Bedford School and Bedford Modern School. This allows me to meet new people who have similar interests as me, and for me to have discussions about what I feel passionate about.

How have your first few weeks gone?

My first few weeks have been fantastic! I am thoroughly enjoying my time at BGS, I have been welcomed into the community with open arms. I feel I have developed into a more independent, determined student even from the short time I have been here. Not only this but I have been able to develop my leadership skills through the House Drama competition. Within each house, the Lower Sixth students devise a piece of drama for the Year 7s to perform. I have been able to compose and choreograph the dance within the drama piece. The rehearsal process was challenging at times, however, seeing the Year 7s dance confidently and with a smile on their face has been very rewarding to see.

I have been able to develop these leadership skills further as I have signed up to attend the Ready2lead initiative where a number of different leaders have come in to talk to us about the different types of leadership styles, helping us to discover what type of leader we are or want to be. We also discussed how to be engaging to our peers and to focus on having a positive impact on society.

What subjects are you studying and why?

I am studying English Literature, Religious Studies and Drama for my A levels. I really enjoy these subjects and I’m eager to broaden my knowledge and understanding on the subjects I most enjoy.

What things have helped you settle in at Bedford Girls’ School?

I have been able to settle so well at BGS due to the support from the teachers, pastoral team and the students in my year group. A number of sessions have taken place for the newcomers who have joined Sixth Form this year. In these sessions, we have talked about what our interests are, and we were given suggestions on co-curricular activities. This was very encouraging to make new connotations with people with similar interests and hobbies. Because of this it made the transition into BGS extremely positive and pragmatic.

The biggest difference between Bedford Girls’ School and your previous school?

I would say the biggest difference between BGS and my previous school is the support provided in lessons. Due to the small class size, I feel more involved in the lessons which has inevitably led me to understand in depth the units we are studying.

Have you joined any clubs and societies? If so, which ones and why?

Since joining the school, I have found an interest in lacrosse! I attend an after-school lacrosse session on Thursdays which I am extremely enjoying and feel supported by the PE staff in trying new sporting opportunities here.

What are your future aspirations after you leave Bedford Girls’ School?

Due to my strong passion for reading, analysing and making comparisons between poems, novels and texts, I will pursue a degree course in English Literature at university. I have been assured that throughout my time here I will enquire lots of career advice, which will guide me into making the very best decisions regarding my future.
