Junior School Eco and Sustainability

By Mrs Whomsley (Junior School Eco Coordinator) and Eco reps, Evie, Chloe and Zoe

As always, our Junior School Eco club are busy working on projects within school to raise awareness for environmental issues and take positive action around school. Here, some of our Year 6 Eco Reps helped to explain the importance of some of our recent work, which included the recent launch of Switch Off Fortnight that runs from 14th-27th November.

Chloe (6BR) reflected on the initiative: "Switch off Fortnight is important because we will save a lot of electricity which will help reduce our carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. For Switch Off Fortnight I will be going around my house and switching off all the plugs and lights that aren't being used.”

Evie (6H) who is our Eco Rep for the Junior School Leadership Group added: “Switch Off Fortnight is important because it’s all about saving energy and, by saving energy, we help stop global warming which means that the world will start to stop heating up. Also, the Arctic and Antarctic's ice will start to melt a bit slower.”

In addition to this, we have been working on one of the Green Flag targets we chose as a school, which is improving our school grounds. The pupils thought of different ways they could take action to create resources to support this, as Zoe (6BR) explains: “As part of our Green Flag work, we wanted to improve our playground so we made bird feeders and used milk cartons, bottle lids, lolly pop sticks and other recycled materials.” We have hung them around our garden and are hoping these will be used to feed the birds during the colder months.

Finally, in a recent transformation to Junior School ‘Eco Elves’, we have been preparing items for our Christmas Fayre. Zoe reflected: “For the Christmas Fayre we have been making salt dough Christmas decorations to hang on Christmas trees. We have also been cutting up old Christmas cards and recycling them to make them into Christmas present tags."

We hope to see you at the Christmas Fayre!
