Throughout the Spring and Summer Terms, we have been giving you a behind the scenes insight of our amazing Green Kitchen Team.
This week, we are introducing our Catering Assistant, Mrs Gaddu. An integral member of the team, Mrs Gaddu has been seen flipping a chapati or two and has also been key organiser at the many lunch themed events.
What is your role at BGS and what attracted you to work here?
My role is a Catering Assistant, I have always loved to work with people and just the thought of working in a busy environment attracted me, plus the challenge of a new job that seemed so full on.
How long have you worked for BGS?
I have worked for BGS for 9 years and have to say thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of it. I previously worked at Bedford Modern School before I joined BGS.
What does a work day look like for you?
I work in the larder section with Chef Lynda, we plan out the lunch menu for the day, I also make sure the teas and coffees are ready for staff in the staff room. I serve the students lunch and make sure all the counters are clean and spotless for the next day, I then help clean the kitchen down and then go to the Chequers Café to manage the after school late care rush.
What's your favourite part of your role?
It's hard to choose what is my favourite part of my job because I enjoy it all, but I have to say serving the students has to be the best. It makes me so happy to see the excitement on the students faces when there is a dish that they absolutely love.
Have you always worked in kitchens and what inspired you to work in a kitchen?
This is my first job in a kitchen. I love cooking for my family and during the weekends I am most likely found in the kitchen at home. I am so grateful to BGS for giving me this opportunity to learn and grow as a person in a challenging, busy role and I have made some amazing lifelong friends at BGS.
If you were asked to cook a meal that describes you, what would it be any why?
A passion fruit and lemon cheesecake ball, clean and simple from the outside but a bomb of excitement and flavour inside.
What is your most memorable moment to date at BGS?
My most memorable moment will definitely have to be when we celebrated Eid last year. I was set up in the dining hall, rolling chapati's for the girls to see, it was just great to see their reaction, being dressed in a cultural outfit was such a great touch to the day. A close second to this would definitely have to be when it was my birthday a few weeks ago and the Junior School students sang happy birthday to me while I was in the middle of serving lunch.
