Mrs Thomas (Year 3 Teacher)
Since September, the introduction of a lunchtime yoga class has become more than just a break in the day; it has been a journey of joy, commitment and well-being. From the beginning, the Junior School yoga class has been a place of enjoyment. The girls have embraced each session, showcasing a fantastic commitment to exploring new poses, cultivating strength and enhancing flexibility. Together, we have delved into the philosophy of yoga by exploring the Eight Limbs (Ashtanga) – a guide to leading a purposeful and fulfilling life, as well as Asanas (physical postures) and Pranayama.
We have practised simple breath work, which are not just exercises but tools for connecting body, heart, and breath. We have also explored the Yamas (Restraints), infusing themes of kindness and respect into our practices, learning to treat ourselves, each other and the world around us with care. Breath work and guided relaxation have become powerful tools for our Junior School students. Each week has centred around a key theme, incorporating the Niyamas (Observances), be it the changing seasons, Halloween festivities, spreading kindness, the brilliance of fireworks, or the enchantment of the wizarding world in Harry Potter.
The impact of our yoga classes doesn't end when the class concludes. The skills developed during these sessions continue to help our girls throughout the rest of their school day. So, I’d like to conclude, by recognising the commitment of our young yogis. Together, they've not only embraced the physical aspects of yoga, such as improved flexibility, better posture, increased balance and coordination and strength but also the philosophy that extends far beyond the mat—a philosophy that fosters kindness, resilience and a lifelong journey of well-being.
I look forward to continuing this wonderful journey in our future Yoga sessions.
