By Mrs Martin (Head of Year 3)
As part of their ongoing exploration into the natural world's influence on creativity and enjoyment, Year 3 recently embarked on an adventure into the realm of sculpture. Led by Mrs Lugsden (Head of Art and Textiles), the girls delved into the intricate world of visual arts, specifically focusing on sculpture creation.
During their visit to the Senior School, the girls immersed themselves in a hands-on experience, learning various techniques to bring their artistic visions to life. Mrs Lugsden guided the budding artists through the process of sculpting with clay. They learned how to create and combine shapes, transforming simple forms into recognisable figures inspired by the wonders of the natural world. Texture played a pivotal role in the girls' artistic skills, as they explored ways to convey feelings, expressions, and movements through their sculptures. Inspired by the shifting seasons and the interaction of sunlight and earth, they explored different textures to capture the essence of their chosen themes.
Drawing upon the works of renowned artists like Andy Goldsworthy, the girls were prompted to incorporate their personal responses into their clay sculptures, enriching them with depth and significance. Throughout this process, they refined their sketching abilities, translating concepts onto paper before shaping them into three-dimensional forms. As the inquiry ends, we look forward to seeing the girls' sculptures displayed in the Junior School Gardens. Each piece reflects their views on nature and shows how art can transform our understanding.
