By Miss Coote (Year 6 Teacher) and Hania (6C)
Last week, Hania from 6C shared a delightful tradition with her classmates by bringing in homemade Chrusr, marking the occasion of Tłusty Czwartek, or Fat Thursday.
This Polish holiday, steeped in Christian tradition, falls on the last Thursday before Ash Wednesday, heralding the beginning of Lent. It's a time when many people indulge in sweet treats before abstaining from them until Easter Sunday. The highlight of this day is often the beloved Pączek, a delectable fried doughnut filled with rose marmalade and generously glazed with sugar. Legend has it that consuming at least one Pączek ensures good luck for the year ahead! Additionally, Chrusr, a pastry shaped like angel wings and coated in sugar, adds to the festive spirit. Hania's thoughtful gesture of sharing these treats was a delightful reminder of the cultural richness our pupils bring to our community!
As we celebrate Tłusty Czwartek, it's fascinating to note that Poland isn't the only country with such joyful traditions. Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy and Sweden all have their own unique Fat Thursday customs, showcasing the diverse tapestry of global cultures. Through embracing these traditions, our students cultivate open-mindedness and knowledge, enriching their understanding of the world around them.
