We were thrilled to welcome the public to our Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 12th October. It was a fantastic opportunity to greet both current and prospective families, allowing them to experience life at BGS firsthand.
The event began in the Senior School Assembly Hall, where Mrs Gibson, Headmistress and Tania Chatterjee, Head Girl, delivered an exciting introduction to the day. From there, students and staff led the way, guiding visitors on insightful tours of the school.
The atmosphere across the school was buzzing with energy, as various departments showcased a wide range of activities. From trying out different sports in the Sports Hall to immersive VR experiences in the LRC, there was something for everyone. Fun science experiments were running in the labs, while the Art and Textiles departments were alive with creative displays and hands-on activities.
Visitors also explored our new Tech Lab, which featured an innovative green screen transporting them to far-flung destinations. They also had the chance to try out a flight simulator, adding even more excitement to the experience.
In Drama and Dance, the Studio Theatre hosted an installation of That Face, an A-Level set text, inspired by Tracey Emin's My Bed. The Studio Theatre was transformed into an exhibition, lit by one of our Theatre Crew students. In a smaller space, pupils from Years 9 to Upper Sixth took part in a student-led improvisation workshop, performing to touring families. In the Dance Studio, a Grade 5 Modern lesson ran as part of our co-curricular Dance programme, alternating with members of our Divergent Dance Company, which runs after school for Years 10 to Upper Sixth.
Meanwhile, over in The Hub, our Sixth Form Common Room, Mrs Woolley, Director of Sixth Form, and her team were on hand to chat with prospective Sixth Form families about academic options and future aspirations.
In the Junior School, pupils from Years 4, 5, and 6 shone as tour guides, encouraging younger visitors to explore the activities on offer. In the Science Lab, guests experienced an immersive Augmented Reality session, using iPads to explore the inner workings of the human body through a special T-shirt. Over in the art room, pupils inspired by Monet’s water lilies proudly shared their pastel creations with visitors.
The Junior School LRC also delighted our young guests, who embraced the ClassVR headsets to see ancient artefacts appear in the palm of their hand. The room was filled with “oohs” and “ahhs” as they engaged with this innovative technology.
Presentations from Mrs Howe, Head of the Junior School, Junior School Ambassador Eva and BGS Junior School parent Mrs Thomas offered personal insights and a warm welcome, adding to the morning’s success.
Throughout the event, our talented musicians performed at various locations, enhancing the vibrant atmosphere and adding a special touch to the day.
