By Mr Mason-McLeod (Head of Hockey)
The hockey season at BGS is off to a great start, with teams from Years 3 through to the Upper Sixth all getting the chance to represent the school.
In the Junior School, our Year 3 girls enjoyed their very first fixture against Swanbourne House, a brilliant milestone for our youngest players. Year 4 also faced Swanbourne House, with more excitement to come in the BMS U9 tournament and more matches lined up after half term. Year 5 impressed with some great hockey against King’s Ely, while the Year 6 girls have had a busy season too. The U11A team took part in the IAPS tournament, narrowly missing out in the quarter-finals on penalties. Meanwhile, the U11B team had a strong performance at the BMS U11A tournament, with wins over Wellingborough A and Broughton Manor A, a draw against BMS A, and a single loss to Stamford A. There’s more to come for the U11s, including the East U11 tournament after half term.
The Senior School has had an equally successful run, with 17 teams playing fixtures this half term and over 230 girls representing the school. There have been standout performances in block fixtures against King’s High, Queenswood, Bedford Modern, and Loughborough Grammar. Several teams remain unbeaten, including the U18/16A, U15B, U12B, U14B, U13B, and U13D teams. The 1st team is still going strong in both the ISHC Plate and the England Hockey U18 Tier 2 Cup, after great wins over Stamford, Hill House, and Kimbolton School. The U13A and U15A teams have also put in solid performances during their cup runs.
After half term, there’s plenty more hockey to look forward to, with block fixtures against The Perse, Ipswich, and Stamford, plus tournaments for the U12, U13, U14 and U16 teams.
Well done to all the students and thank you to the parents for their continued support from the sidelines.
